Waste generation is an indicator that is closely related to the level of economic activity in a given country. It is also an indicator of the raw material consumption model. From 2005 to 2021, the amount of municipal waste generated increased by more than 73 %. The recovery rate in this period increased from less than 2.6 % to 57.6 %. In the year-on-year comparison of 2020 and 2021, the recovery rate increased by 5.5 percentage points. In 2021, one citizen of the Slovak Republic produced 509 kg of municipal waste. A serious problem that relates to municipal waste disposal is a high rate of landfilling, which in 2021 was 40.1%.
