Water
The state of the environment in Slovakia is positively influenced by low per capita water consumption and large water reserves. The quality of drinking water from the public water supply is also sufficient. However, polluted water from own-built wells can pose a problem. The low rate of connection to wastewater treatment plants also presents a problem. Overall quality of life is not yet a problem larger than in other OECD countries, although there is room for improvement.
Biodiversity and habitat
Slovakia will prevent the deterioration of protected species and habitats. At least 15% of degraded ecosystems will be restored by 2030. The reassessment and appropriate completion of the system of protected areas and the elaboration, approval and implementation of management documents will create opportunities for the management of all important species and habitats in the Slovak Republic.
Forests
Logging will continue to be practiced in a sustainable manner. In non-active management areas it will be prohibited and in areas with active management, close-to-nature management will be favoured. The overall value of forest ecosystem services will not decline. Public and
institutional scrutiny of logging will increase.
Agriculture
Organic agricultural production will occupy at least 13.5% of land in 2030. Particularly on large agricultural areas, consistent crop rotation will be required, depending on their nutrient requirements, irrigation and rooting depth. Deep ploughing and contour ploughing will increase the absorption capacity of the soil and prevent soil erosion. Poor ploughing after the rainfall causes the most fertile topsoil to be carried away by rainwater. Measures shall be taken to reduce the compaction of farmland by agricultural machinery so as to promote soil biodiversity. Applicable laws will be strictly enforced and consequences for non-compliance will be drawn.
The Slovak Republic ranked 18th out of 180 countries assessed in 2020 with a score of 60,0 (0=worst, 100=best).
